Afrodite è in Artemide.

"We are convinced that the love between Artemis and Endymion was not carnal. This of course does not rule out - quite the contrary, in fact- the possibility that the less forceful of the two longed to spill blood. The cruel disposition of the virgin goddess - mistress of beasts who emerged from the host of undescribable mother goddesses of the monstrous Mediterranean - is well-known. Equally well-known is that one of the two wants to sleep when he cannot sleep and goes down in history as the eternal dreamer."
- Cesare Pavese, Introduction to the dialogue "La belva" [The Beast], in Dialoghi con Leucò [Dialogues with Leucò], Torino, Einaudi, 1947.

Orpheus appears together with the ghost. The distance is both luminous and dark, and turning around is the only apparent bane of Orpheus, this figure of farewells who is Artemis. Orpheus precedes the woman of his life as they make their way out; but to resist turning around takes more strength than a simple glance. Here and now. The figure of love who descends to Hades brings to the surface everything which prevents that glance from being alive. Genou d'Artémide also places us in front of death through the presence of life. Aphrodite is in Artemis. Straub, more like Dreyer than ever (the final lesson of Ordet), asks us if it will ever be possible to sacrifice life, even if this only involves a mere glance. But it is not possible (and if you have any doubts, you need only watch a few scenes from Straub's recently completed film, Le Streghe [The Witches], also from Dialoghi con Leucò [Dialogues with Leucò] - patron goddess of shipwrecks and perfidious queens). Our punishment is to remain forever awake, contrary to the cold prophesy of Pavese. And we will pay for the memory of desire with our lives.
