Il film è un ritratto dell'America degli anni '60 visti attraverso l'esperienza degli artisti della Beat Generation e della Pop Art: riprese ironiche e incalzanti restituiscono il ritmo travolgente della città di New York, intrecciandosi agli artisti che parlano del loro presente. I quadri di Warhol, Lichtenstein, Raushenberg, le animazioni di Mogubgub traducono in immagini il senso delle parole. Ne emerge il profilo di un'America solcata da contraddizioni dirompenti: da un lato la guerra del Vietnam e dall'altro l'entusiasmo per un passaggio storico che appare aperto a ogni possibile cambiamento. Gli anni '60 si presentano densi di contraddizioni e di problemi sociali ma potenzialmente saturi di aspettative per il futuro.
Acquistato e trasmesso da 14 emittenti straniere, tra il 1967 e il 68, ha vinto il premio Coppa Agis al Festival dei Popoli di Firenze nel 1967.

What’s Happening is a portrait of the America of the 1960s seen through the experience of the artists of the Beat Generation and the Pop Art movement: Allen Ginsberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Fred Mogubgub, Andy Warhol, Marie Benois, Robert Rauschenberg, Gregory Corso and the art collector Leon Kraushar. Ironic and immanent shots portray the sweeping rhythm of New York City, intersecting with the artists speaking about their lives. The works of Warhol, Lichtenstein and Rauschenberg translate the sense of the words to images. What emerges is a profile of an America buried in shattering contradictions: on one side the Vietnam War and on the other the enthusiasm for a historical passage that seems open to every possible change. The 1960s are dense in contradictions and social problems but saturated with expectations for the future.
The film, shot between 1967 and 1968, was acquired and transmitted by 14 foreign broadcasting companies.
What’s Happening won the Coppa Agis prize at the Festival dei Popoli in Florence in 1967.
